Why Natural Products Can Look a Little Different — And Why That’s Okay

If you’ve ever opened a jar of natural body butter and thought, “Hmm… this looks a little different than the last one,” you’re not imagining it.
And no, your product hasn't suddenly decided to have a personality disorder. 😂
When products are made with natural ingredients in small batches, colour, texture, scent and consistency can sometimes vary slightly from one batch to another.
Here's why—and why those little differences aren't necessarily something to worry about.
🌿 Natural Ingredients Aren’t Perfectly Uniform
One of the things we love about natural ingredients is also one of the things that makes them less predictable.
Plant oils, butters, beeswax and other naturally derived ingredients can vary based on things like their source, season, processing and storage.
That means two batches made with the same ingredients can sometimes look or feel slightly different.
And that's okay.
We're not manufacturing identical plastic widgets by the million.
We're making skincare.
🧴 Why Does the Colour Change?
Natural products can sometimes vary in colour from batch to batch.
For example, a butter or oil may have a slightly different natural colour depending on the raw ingredient itself.
A finished product might therefore be:
- A little lighter
- A little darker
- Slightly more golden
- Slightly more creamy
That doesn't automatically mean anything is wrong with the product.
In fact, when you're working with natural ingredients, perfectly identical colour isn't always realistic.
🌱 What About Texture?
Texture can change too.
Temperature plays a particularly big role with products containing ingredients like beeswax, shea butter and coconut oil.
Jaxon Naturals notes that its natural products may soften in hot weather or become firmer in colder temperatures. That's a completely normal characteristic of these ingredients and doesn't mean the product has gone bad.
Think about coconut oil sitting in your kitchen.
In a warm room?
Liquid.
In a cool room?
Solid.
Same ingredient. Very different texture.
Your skincare can behave in much the same way.
🐝 Why Small-Batch Products Can Be Different
There's another piece of the puzzle: how the product is made.
At Jaxon Naturals, products are handcrafted in small batches right here in Prince Edward Island.
Small-batch production means we're working with real ingredients rather than trying to make every jar look like it came out of the exact same machine at exactly the same second.
That doesn't mean we don't care about consistency.
We absolutely do.
It means that consistency and absolute uniformity aren't quite the same thing.
We want every batch to meet our standards while understanding that natural ingredients have their own little quirks.
💚 You'll See This With Some of Our Favourite Products
Our Body Butter, for example, is made with olive oil, coconut oil, beeswax, shea butter and cocoa butter.
Those ingredients each have their own characteristics—and temperature can affect how the finished butter feels.
Our Hand Cream Bar is another great example. It's a solid formula made with beeswax, shea butter and coconut oil, so temperature can naturally affect how firm or soft it feels.
And our Smoove Stick, made with coconut oil, beeswax and shea butter, can also be affected by the environment around it.
These aren't flaws.
They're simply characteristics of the ingredients we're choosing to work with.
☀️ A Little Care Goes a Long Way
Because natural products can respond to temperature, how you store them matters.
We recommend keeping your products:
- In a cool, dry place
- Away from direct sunlight
- Away from excessive heat
- Properly closed when not in use
And if something gets a little softer during a hot summer day?
Don't panic.
Likewise, if something feels firmer after sitting somewhere cool, that's not necessarily a problem either.
Your natural skincare isn't broken.
It may just be responding to the weather. 😂
🌿 What About Changes in Scent?
Natural products can also have subtle variations in scent.
Natural ingredients don't always smell exactly the same from one batch to the next, and products made with essential oils or natural flavour oils can have their own individual characteristics.
Again, slight variation is different from a product being spoiled or unsafe.
